Best things to do in Madrid when you are alone

In January I decided I would go on a little solo trip to Madrid. I had been to other places in Spain, but never to the Capital. As it was winter, I thought it would be a good time to visit. This is because I personally prefer city trips in the winter and then save my beach trips for the summer. I was not sure on what I was going to do there, but I wanted it to be memorable. After googling and asking a few people, I found several things to do, that I thoroughly enjoyed doing alone. So, in my opinion, here are the best things to do in Madrid when you are alone.

Watch the sunset at the Temple of Debod

This was one of my favourite things to do. I headed to the area a couple of hours before the sun was due to set. I sat and took everything in. It is a very popular area. Although I was alone, I did not feel alone. I people watched at the beginning and then as the sunset, took in the colours and nature around me. It is a very peaceful and wholesome activity. Even in the winter time you are able to get a good view of the sunset. As a solo woman traveller, I felt very safe.

Go to a Flamenco show

There are loads of shows that provide the flamenco dance. Some include a free drink, others include food. I think it is better if you have a research on websites like https://www.getyourguide.co.uk/as they will provide reviews for you to read and you can choose one. I went alone and had a great time. As you are not allowed to speak and spend most of the night watching the dancing, it is a great way to spend your time alone 🙂

Visit the food market

The food market provides a variety of dishes in a street food hall. It is a great place to go if you do not know what you want for dinner. It can get quite busy, but as there are a lot of people, I feel that it is a good place to go as you do not feel alone. It can feel quite overwhelming, but if you are someone who does not like finding a restaurant to eat at, then I think the provides a good alternative.

Visit the palace

If you would prefer to spend some time walking around, learning about history and at your own pace, then I would recommend visiting the palace. It is extraordinarily beautiful. You can spend a few hours getting lost in the palace and looking at the gallery. This activity allows you to go at your own pace and can take up a few hours of your time.

Chocolatería San Ginés

Lastly, the most important thing you need to do alone, is visit the famous Chocolateria San Gines. This was highly recommended by a lot of people as it is famous for churros and chocolate. As it is very popular, I would say you should go in the morning (if you are not fussed about sweets for breakfast). It can be a bit overwhelming because of how many people go, however, I did not feel rushed. Usually you cannot sit around for too long due to the popularity, so being alone is perfect. If you do want to have a longer sit down, then you could always head to another cafe after.

Travelling alone can be daunting at times, especially if you are new to it or get a bit nervous. Just know that no one is looking at you and you can enjoy your time just as much as if you were with someone else!

Happy travels 🙂
