What can I do in Kefalonia?

Kefalonia is a peaceful, beautiful, majestic island, which I would have loved to explore for longer. Located in Greece, it is a less known/popular island often missed by tourists. Although it is a pretty small island, there is still some good things for you to do despite it being a less known island. I personally think it should be one to visit if you’re looking for a different Greek island vibe, in particular, a more peaceful vibe. You might be asking ‘what can I do in Kefalonia?’ Actually there’s quite a lot, but it depends on your ideal holiday.

As it is a quiet place it is ideal for relaxing, but if you find yourself looking for a little bit more then here is what I recommend:

Beaches:

If you’re a big beach lover you’re in luck. There’s loads of beaches around the island. If you are based in the towns centre you can get the bus to some cute hidden beaches. Depending on where you are based (hotel wise) it would be good to look for your nearest beaches as you don’t want to spend all day on a bus looking to get to the beach. Thats the good thing about Kefalonia, as it is a small Island, you are likely to be located near a beach. When I went, we were able to visit around 4 beaches in one day. A lot of them are easily located by public transport (although be sure to check the bus times as they can sometimes be a long wait). Alternatively you could hire a car or get a taxi. Each beach has a different vibe. Some offer water sports, whereas some have more of a beach party vibe.

Town centre:

We stayed in a quiet area, around 30/45 minutes away from the main area. There are some trails to follow if you dont mind exploring and getting lost. If you would rather, you can go into the city centre. Here is where most of the restaurants as well as bars/pubs and other local shops to explore. You could also hire a boat or an electric boat for the day or a few hours if the weather is good.

Tours:

If you are looking for a an activity that takes a bit longer than usual, I would suggest booking a tour. There are several tours on the island and you can choose from a variety of them from websites such as https://www.getyourguide.co.uk/kefalonia-l32475 or https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g189457-Activities-c42-Kefalonia_Ionian_Islands.htm

One particular activity that I loved was the The Caves tours (Drogarati Cave and Melissani Lake). It took a couple of hours to get to the location and is quite busy, but the sites were so beautiful. Part of the trip involves going on a row boat with others around a beautiful natural lake located in a cave. It is honestly stunning and one of the bucketlist.

Kefalonia in my opinion is a great place to relax and catch the sun. You will likely avoid the business of other Greek Islands as it is not as popular, but still as beautiful.
